  • Custody, Elizabeth A. Parker, Intimate Partner Violence, Presentations

On January 31, 2025, Attorney Elizabeth A. Parker and Dr. Deborah Gilman led a comprehensive 4-hour Continuing Legal Education training program designed to equip family law professionals, guardian ad litem, and supervised visit personnel with the knowledge and skills to identify, understand, and address Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and Coercive Control (CC) in family law matters. This training was developed to ensure local compliance with Kayden’s Law, which aims to improve the safety of children involved in custody cases where there are allegations of abuse. The training utilized a real-world case study to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the complexities of IPV and CC and how to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations.

Key takeaways from the training included:

  • Defining Intimate Partner Violence and Coercive Control: Participants learned about the various forms and tactics of Intimate Partner Violence and Coercive Control, including physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and psychological abuse.
  • Impact on Children: The training explored the short-term and long-term consequences of witnessing Intimate Partner Violence and Coercive Control on children, including emotional distress, behavioral problems, and an increased risk of mental health disorders.
  • Legal Considerations: Participants examined relevant legal protections and procedures related to Intimate Partner Violence and Coercive Control, such as restraining orders, custody arrangements, and child support.
  • Collaborative Approaches: The training highlighted effective strategies for working with victims and perpetrators, including collaboration with victim advocates, court-based programs, and mental health professionals.
  • Addressing Safety and Risk: Participants learned how to develop safety plans, assess potential threats, and involve mental health professionals in conducting comprehensive evaluations and providing expert testimony.

The training provided valuable insights and practical skills for legal professionals working with families affected by Intimate Partner Violence and Coercive Control. By understanding the dynamics of Intimate Partner Violence and Coercive Control and the legal and psychological implications, professionals can better protect their clients and ensure their safety and well-being.
