A Panel Discussion on the Challenges and Solutions for Third-Party Caregivers, Moderated by Attorney Elizabeth A. Parker

  • June 16, 2023
  • Custody, Elizabeth A. Parker, Presentations

Attorney Elizabeth A. Parker moderated a CLE program titled “Party of Three – Your Order Is Ready: Tips and Tools for Addressing Third-Party Caregiver Issues” at the Allegheny County Bar Association’s annual Bench-Bar Conference on June 16, 2023. This program, presented by the Family Law Section and Family Division, explored the complexities surrounding third-party caregivers in family law matters. It highlighted the challenges faced by these caregivers, particularly grandparents, who often struggle with legal and practical issues related to medical and mental healthcare for the children in their care. This includes navigating issues related to obtaining medical and mental health treatment, including consent for treatment and access to records, especially in situations where parental rights are still in place.

A key focus of the program was developing strategies for creating comprehensive court orders that address these challenges. The discussion emphasized the importance of crafting orders that serve the best interests of all parties involved, including the children, caregivers, parents, and medical providers, while acknowledging the vital role that psychologists and other mental health professionals play in these cases.

The program featured a panel of experts who provided valuable insights from legal, judicial, and healthcare perspectives. The panelists shared their knowledge and experience, offering practical guidance on legal custody, medical consent, access to children’s records, and other relevant issues. Attendees were provided with valuable resources, including sample court orders, relevant statutes, and other helpful materials to assist them in navigating the complexities of third-party caregiver issues in family law. The program underscored the growing importance of addressing these issues and equipped attendees with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate these complex situations effectively.
